General Description Of The Role/Position ContextThe Shift Manager is responsible for the supervision of personnel in fermenting, distilling, sanitation and auxiliary services related to the manufacture of rum in the Distillery. Mission/Objectives The Distillery Shift Manager aspires to be an individual who demonstrates the core competencies of Passion, Integrity, Pragmatism and Togetherness while on the job. The Distillery Shift Manager must respond to the needs of the organization in an efficient, quality oriented, safe and cost-effective manner while maintaining excellent customer satisfaction and preserving staff morale. The Distillery Shift Manager achieves this in ways that demonstrates teamwork, to accomplish the desired objectives of the company through good manufacturing practices, synergy and innovation. This will ensure that sustainability, growth, and value for all will be realized within the company and its environment Performance Criteria: The job has been successfully performed when:
  • Fermentation Efficiency is above 85%.
  • Distillation process efficiency is above 90%
  • Alcohol recovery efficiency is 95% and above for column and above 85% for pots.
  • Product quality conforms to the standards.
  • HS&E Compliance is 100%
  • Problems causing downtime in the production process are addressed with effective corrective actions to eliminate repeating issues.
  • 5s compliance is fully adhered to.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
  • Supervise activities in the Fermenting house and Distillation areas to ensure production efficiencies are achieved i.e. Fermenter Efficiency, Alcohol Recovery Efficiency and Process Efficiency.
  • Ensure all rums produced meets the quality standards required for shipment
  • Solve problems relating to distillation inefficiency and poor production output to ensure productivity is consistent because of Distillery Operations
  • Ensure full adherence to Production Schedules to meet required weekly shipments to Kingston
  • Analyze forecast requirements to identify liquid supply gaps, opportunities, and process constraints.
  • Liaise with the liquid planner to outline these constraints and propose corrective actions
  • Liaises with the Maintenance Department, when necessary, in the event of problems causing downtime in the manufacturing process.
  • Ensures that Daily Management Systems are in place and maintained i.e. Daily Directional Setting Meetings and Behavioral Observation Audits. Updates all DMS Boards daily.
  • Conduct daily audits to ensure adherence to Food Safety, GMP, ISO and QHSE, requirements and any/all other Company policies and procedures
  • Prepares all reports relating to key Production activities including (not limited to): Daily SQDCM reports, downtime, Incident Reports related to QHSE Compliance.
  • Complete weekly QHSE Audits (Bund inspections, PPE adherence, BOWs, 5s inspections) and submit report for corrective action
  • Ensure proper housekeeping and 5s is maintained at the distillery
  • Ensure cleaning and sanitation practices are adhered to in the Distillery
  • Responds to all non-conformances by completing and submitting Corrective and Preventative Action reports.
  • Leads and motivates members of Distillery Team to increase the level of the team’s commitment and engagement.
  • Monitors and coaches’ employees as required. Handles behavioral matters and take appropriate disciplinary action per established policy guidelines
  • Manages and provides input regarding individual team members’ performance, training and/or development needs.
  • Ensure proper coordination of staff to eliminate inefficiencies through absenteeism and reduce overtime
  • Sign off Timecards for all direct reports in Kronos Timekeeper system
  • Coordinate/Manage verification and calibration of all critical instruments and maintain calibration records for audits
  • Conduct monthly warehouse assessment and complete the checklists
  • Review and update work instructions; implementation of new work instructions/processes
  • Ensure emergency transportation is provided in the event any employees are reported ill/injured on the job
  • Performs any other related duties, which may be assigned from time to time.
Authority Work requires the interpretation of technical and detailed guidelines and requires the use of considerable judgement, analysis of facts, examination of circumstances and careful thought to arrive at answers and solutions. New methods may be devised, or existing standard operations may be modified to meet conditions. Work is performed independently with only general direction. Supervisor does not usually check on activities or quality of work. Rarely is it necessary to refer cases to the supervisor. Key Relationships Internal: Fermentation & Process Control Superintendent, Production Personnel, Quality Team Leader and Analyst, Engineers, Stores Personnel, Security Personnel, Liquid Planner Warehouse Supervisor. External: Rum and Molasses tanker drivers, Excise Officers, Service Contractors Reporting Relationships Reports to: Distillery Manager Supervises: All production employees Experience Required
  • Thorough knowledge of all processes carried out in the fermenting house, distillation stations, Rum store, Powerhouse and boilers.
  • Capable of sensory evaluation and analysis of GC results.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in the capacity of a supervisor
  • Good knowledge of Distillation Processes.
Education / Professional Qualifications
  • First Degree in Business Managements Studies or Physics .
  • Secondary/Tertiary qualification in Technical Studies such as Chemistry and Engineering
Skills
  • Human relation and time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office software

Working Conditions Working hours may exceed 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week to ensure smooth and consistent operation Physical Demands The Distillery Shift Manager has a physical, strenuous, and demanding job. They may at times handle potentially dangerous materials he/she must ensure that all activities are completed in a safe and efficient way to eliminate possibility of non-compliance to the companies’ standards. Environmental Conditions and Sensory Demands The Distillery Shift Manager must work in all different conditions including extreme heat. He will be exposed to unpleasant smells and may also at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances and must take the necessary precautions to protect eye, nose and skin from irritation and infections. Mental Demands The Distillery Shift Manager must work independently and is expected to maintain a schedule of delivery, collection, and disposal. Any problems or inconvenience may result in increased stress to complete tasks in a limited time. Stress is caused by the requirement to supervise and direct others. The Shift Manager must be sensitive to the culture of employees.
