About the Opportunity

Under the direction of the Grounds Manager, provide campus-wide landscaping services

Duties:

  • Waters, cultivates, mows, lawns, shrubs, hedges, trees, and other plants in both landscaped and wooded areas.

  • Prunes hedges, shrubs and trees; cuts flowers and mows lawns; ensures application of fertilizer,plant treatments, and other methods to maintain healthy plants and lawns.

  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs sprinkler systems valves and electronic controllers;

  • Uses leaf blowers, turfvacs, power sweepers and other tools or hands to remove trash and debris from grounds.

  • Operates hand and power tools, including but not limited to rototillers, stump grinders, wood chippers, log splitters, mowers, chainsaws, edgers, weed whips. Maintain and make minor repairs to equipment as necessary.

  • Performs general duties related to grounds keeping, such as cleaning drains, pick up papers and rubbish, clear brush and leaves, performs minor asphalt and concrete work, dig trenches as assigned.

  • Assists in moving furniture, boxes, and equipment related to commencement set up and take down.

  • Maintain safe work conditions and comply with established safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

  • Common gardening and lawn maintenance tools, materials and equipment.

  • Principles and practices involved in grounds maintenance work.

  • Sustainable groundskeeping practices.

  • Record keeping techniques

  • Basic computer programs such as email. MS Office suite knowledge a plus.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Speak and understand English.

  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Must be customer service oriented.

  • Meet or exceed the college’s attendance and tardiness guidelines.

  • Work in crews or independently.

  • Understand and follow directions and complete work assignments on schedule.

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

  • Work safely in compliance with College Injury and Illness Prevention Plan.

Education and Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of working experience in grounds maintenance.

  • Valid California driver's license and safe driving record.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands:

Physical:

  • Lifting, pulling, or pushing heavy objects up to 50 lbs.

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools and equipment.

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Standing for extended periods of time

Environment:

  • Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.

  • May work at high elevations in trees and in bucket truck

  • Works around pesticides

  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work.

  • Works around machinery having moving parts.

The hourly rate is $29.90.
