The Senior Software Engineer at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin will support the critical applications that support life insurance application processing and contract generation. Collaborate with product, engineers, and designers in order to enhance and modernize top tier technical applications. These applications include Mainframe Jobs and modules. Apply understanding of software life cycle and design patterns to understand the technical features being built. Participate in weekly refinement meetings. Utilize development skills, impact analysis, using tools for debugging, compiling, merging and unit testing. Practice Agile Methodologies to implement these Technical Application requirements. Understand the business requirements for the specific technical project, for example understand necessary modifications and assist with the production introduction of E-Delivery of Insurance Contracts. Focus on technologies to provide efficient solutions, for example, if the current solution involves the use of filer solution, design the change such that there is no filer dependencies and these changes are isolated. Collaborate with an engineering team and responsible for monitoring live systems, fixing bugs, writing new features, maintaining documentation, participating in planning sessions and mentoring junior engineers. Collaborate in a deeply functional manner with engineers and business to brainstorm requirements for features and solution through difficult defects. Analyze technical solutions and provide estimates for feature implementation. Explain technical solutions to both technical and non-technical teams and apply experience architecting the design solutions. Attend day to day meetings with the teams and participate in the workout for planning. Work on monitoring the applications including Post Approval mainframe batch jobs and application. Develop the code for new features such as Contract Modernization and new life insurance products. Develop Mainframe REST services for the Spec pages for the Contract Modernization project. Conduct sessions for Junior Engineers for mentoring purposes evaluating work on engineering processes and application development. Work with engineering leaders in improving CICD for mainframe, re-writing code to enable better unit testing. Explore new tools from IBM and other companies to see how they can be used to improve code maintainability. Apply experience with engineering best practices, including analyzing, designing, developing, deploying and supporting software solutions and infrastructure implementations and upgrades. Telecommuting permissible from anywhere in the U.S. Salary $109,973 - $200,200 per year.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering or a related field plus five years of experience with the complete software development lifecycle. Five years of experience must include two years of experience with each of the following: (1) Mainframe, DB2, JCL, COBOL, PL1, CICS, RDBMS, REXX, SAS, VSAM, MQ Series, Host Scope; (2) IMS and tools including Xpeditor, Changeman, Endevor, Filemanager, CA7, CTRL M, Compuset and Intertest; (3) Testing, analyzing, designing, developing, deploying, and supporting software solutions and infrastructure implementations and upgrades; (4) Designing Automation Test strategies for technical and business process related upgrade projects; (5) Using JIRA for sprint events, Dashboard creation, test execution using Zephyr, defect logging and tracking; and (6) following Agile scrum methodologies and sprint planning.
