The Sicilian cart (carretto siciliano) is one of the most recognizable symbols in Sicilian folklore. Originating in the early 19th century, this horse or donkey-drawn cart was most notable for its colorful and ornate designs. Although its use today has become obsolete, the cart remains a staple of Sicilian art and decoration. Through intricate geometric designs and scenes depicting chivalrous, mythological, historical or novel-esque gestures, this cart also served as a canvas by which artists conveyed historical information. The colors of Sicily’s flag, yellow and red, are prominently featured on the carts, along with details in bright blues and greens. It has become an inspiration for a lot of Sicilian and Italian art, deco and fashion. Most notably, Dolce & Gabbana, who have pioneered the fashion industry in Sicily. Similarly, our passion and vision has derived from these cart designs. Many of our hand painted bottles and accessories emulate the designs found on these carts. Our mission is to share our passion for the colors, tastes, and smells of Sicily with you. In doing so, we hope to teach you all about our beloved and bountiful island.
