About the Opportunity:

Reporting to the Senior Director for Global Site Security within the Northeastern University Police Department (NUPD), the Associate Director (AD) of Global Site Security will be based on the Boston campus with extensive travel requirements to all Global Network locations. The main focus of this position will be physical security of existing and future locations, strategic development of safety resources, & community engagement & training.

The current global locations include: Miami, FL; Charlotte, NC; Arlington, VA; Portland, ME; Toronto, CA; London, UK, Vancouver, CA, Seattle, Washington, Oakland, California, San Jose, California, and San Francisco, California.

Responsibilities:

Travel to additional site locations may be required dependent on university expansion. This position requires a valid U.S. Passport.

Training (40%)

A significant portion of the AD’s responsibility will be dedicated to the continual training of campus operations staff, faculty, and students. There are numerous trainings required to fulfill Clery obligations, including annual safety & security training. Additional trainings include the new employee orientations and refresher trainings for contracted security, as well as specialized trainings focused on incident preparedness & response. The AD will also play a large role in delivering student orientation safety training at least twice a year for all Global Network locations.

To best execute this requirement, the successful candidate will have a proven record of community engagement and a background in training and public speaking.

Contracted Services Oversight (30%)

The university utilizes various security and transportation vendors to provide safety resources for the community. The AD will be responsible for oversight of contracted security services and other safety related vendors around the Global Network. This will require an organized communication schedule and in-person visits to connect with on-site staff, as well as frequent check-ins with contract client managers. Contract management & expansion is included in this responsibility.

Physical Security Site Assessments & Relationship Development (20%)

As part of the continual development and enhancement of the physical security of the Global Network locations, the AD will be required to travel frequently to all sites to conduct site security assessments. As part of the assessment, observations will be made of the following items, including but not limited to: Access control, visitor management, security cameras, contracted security services, duress alarms, intrusion alarms, and other security related vendors and equipment. Thorough reports indicating the current status and suggested improvements will be drafted and presented to the Senior Director and other university officials.

As part of the routine site visits, the AD will be expected to develop professional working relationships and contacts within the local law enforcement departments, as well as other emergency service and security providers. The AD will continually enhance the communication between public safety and property management for leased locations, and will ensure that the Northeastern community within each site is supported in all things safety & security.

Strategic Planning, Expansion Support, & Incident Response (10%)

The Associate Director of Global Site Security will be expected to participate in university discussions regarding strategic expansion and enhancement of public safety services for the Global Network. The AD will then develop and present comprehensive recommendations, and work routinely with construction project managers to ensure that the sites are correctly outfitted with the relative physical security prescription.

As part of their daily responsibilities, the AD will be expected to provide guidance to the Global Network regarding security incidents, both minor and significant in nature. The AD will be expected to properly escalate and recommend further incident discussion with the appropriate university officials. The AD will also act as a liaison for the Global Network, directing the community to proper contacts within the NUPD and other university departments for additional support.

Additional Information

This is an on-call position, as the AD will be expected to provide guidance for significant incidents occurring across the Global Network sites. The AD will also be expected to offer support response as needed for critical incidents.

This is a salary position, with the expectation that the AD will maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate travel, varying time zones for routine meetings & trainings, as well as unexpected incident response.

This position will require extensive computer use, to include the preparation of high- level presentations, proposals, and executive briefings. Candidates applying for this position should have previous experience preparing high-level, professional documents and be proficient with Microsoft Word & Powerpoint.

In addition to the required and preferred qualifications below, the successful candidate will demonstrate a knowledge of the current best practices and trends in the safety & security field. Applicants should have a proven track record of successful communication skills, both oral and written, and will be required to demonstrate these skills to varying audiences on a regular basis.

The AD will be required to accept feedback from all levels within the university, and articulate comprehensive recommendations based on security needs. A balance of strategic vision and operational competency will be required. This is a dynamic position requiring a high level of self-motivation and experience pivoting between rotating priorities.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least 2 years of experience in the field of security, public safety, or law enforcement
  • General knowledge of CPTED principles, to include basic security equipment such as security cameras, access control, and other target hardening measures
  • Knowledge of public safety communications practices and procedures and the technical language of Police, Fire, EMS, APCO, and Public Safety.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License and Passport
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate travel
  • Required to pass a comprehensive background check process
  • Strong organizational & time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal, coaching, and management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively – to present ideas, both in writing and orally, in a technical and non-technical manner, with internal and external constituencies
  • Ability to effectively instruct and lead training sessions related to public safety
  • Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships, both within the university and externally with local, state, and federal partners
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, university administrators, government/industrial representatives, and students
  • Ability to work with a broad range and diverse population of people


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice, communications, leadership, or other related area is preferred
  • Additional training/credentials related to the area of physical security, public safety, law enforcement, and/or security technology
  • Prior experience managing large scale, complex projects
  • Prior experience with vendor contracts and the procurement process, to include the RFP and RFI process
  • Law enforcement or security experience in the field of higher education, corporate, or medical setting is strongly preferred
  • Experience with large campuses or sites with multi-use buildings and varying levels of risk assessment
  • Familiarity with the higher education environment, including academic, research, and administrative operations
