JOB SUMMARY
The Director of the Asian American Center works to enhance an effective infrastructure that supports the advancement of the Asian American Center (AAC) at Northeastern University through a breadth of support services and programs aimed at Asian American students. The Director will ensure the academic, personal, social, cultural, and professional growth of Asian American students in a manner that fosters student success and leadership development while also recognizing and respecting the dynamic of bicultural, multicultural, and intersectional life experiences and perspectives.
The Director will promote awareness of issues germane to the Asian American community across the Northeastern global network. They will work closely with various University departments and community organizations to attract and retain qualified Asian American students and oversee the successful implementation of departmental operations, including; student services, programming, budgetary planning, marketing, advocacy, staffing, training, and other administrative functions. The Director will oversee operations and management of the space at 109 Hemenway St and serve as a resource to the University in fostering a climate that promotes increased understanding and appreciation of the needs and concerns expressed by Asian American students as well as the direct participation of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. They will develop and enhance effectual communication pathways with other units, including other cultural centers on campus in order to maximize the efficacy of AAC initiatives while eliminating the potential for redundancy.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Administration: Oversee office operations to effectively engage Asian American students and others by administering a gamut of relevant programs and services. Plan, implement, and evaluate departmental initiatives. Establish and enhance internal policies and procedures while also developing and maintaining productive University and community relationships. Manage the Center’s budget, fundraising efforts, and the selection and training of student employees. Supervise full time as well as student and faculty staff members. Identify and refine key institutional relationships of benefit to students.
Community Outreach/ Public Relations/Fundraising: Engage the greater Boston community) in the activities of the AAC, in line with the urban mission of the University. Facilitate connections between Asian American students and members of the community, including professional/alumni networking opportunities. Develop relationships with public schools in Boston. Enhance the visibility of the department.
Cultural Enrichment and Empowerment: Across the Northeastern global network, promote heightened institutional awareness and recognition of the diversity within the Asian American community, help students grapple with complex issues pertaining to bicultural and multicultural life experiences. Organize cultural programs and student leadership/mentoring opportunities that offer Asian American students a means to connect with their histories and cultures while also inviting broader University participation. Help coordinate orientation activities and social support networks for Asian American students. Promote intercultural understanding, including a focus on the breadth of Asian American cultures and ethnicities. Work with Asian American and International student organizations as appropriate.
Educational/Academic Outreach: Collaborate with faculty and other educators across the Northeastern global network to develop educational seminars and to identify/promote “Asian American experiences” courses that could be used as a precursor toward the establishment of a dynamic Asian American Studies program at Northeastern. Develop and disseminate information/resource materials pertinent to the Asian American experience and departmental activities.
Student Advising and Advocacy: Provide advising services to Asian American students that address academic, financial, cultural, career, social and personal goals/concerns necessary to ensure a successful college experience. Serve as an advocate and liaison for Asian American students through effective outreach that helps to achieve student satisfaction and retention. Connect students to appropriate resources and opportunities by serving as an advisor and advocate, linking various aspects of a student's experience (e.g., academic, personal, cultural, financial) on matters ranging from the selection of courses/majors/careers and the procurement of financial aid to issues surrounding the process of acculturation/ transition to University life. Assist with recruitment efforts as they relate to Asian American students. Increase institutional awareness regarding the breadth of issues impacting Asian Americans.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A master’s degree, preferably in higher education administration, cultural studies, social sciences, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of various protected classes/groups and critical issues for various ethnic groups and students with disabilities.
- Proven experience in working effectively with Asian American students and/or communities, and extensive knowledge of Asian American issues/experiences also required.
- A minimum of five years of administrative experience is necessary, preferably in higher education.
- Strong administrative, organizational, marketing, leadership, and cross-cultural communication skills, along with formal advising and advocacy experience, is crucial.
