Wilson Elser's Human Resources department currently seeks an HR Compliance and Leave Manager to support our US offices. This position is hybrid with a requirement to be in the office three days per week.

This is an excellent opportunity for a strategic-minded HR compliance and policy professional to join an impactful and growing HR team. This position will play an essential part in working with key stakeholders to ensure that the Firm is a top employer of choice. The Human Resources Leave and Policy Manager is responsible for the coordination, implementation, oversight, and management of various regulatory and compliance and leave processes.

The Position

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business or related area of study
  • JD from an accredited law school preferred
  • 5 years of experience in a leave administration and policy development, compliance or regulatory focused role within Human Resources, preferably within the legal industry
  • Experience managing leaves in California highly desired.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to understand and apply existing and updated federal, state and local regulations/laws
  • Extensive knowledge of the leave requirements and other legal protections afforded by the FMLA, ADA, and other applicable laws
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to lead, collaborate and communicate with all levels across the firm and build strong working relationships
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with confidence and diplomacy
  • High ethical standards, integrity, and adherence to confidentiality
  • High Proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft Office Applications
  • Proficiency with UKG Pro desired

Responsibilities

  • Research and interpret complex HR and employment related legislation; identify potential impact(s) and propose recommendations for enhancing Wilson Elser’s approach to complying with federal, state and local employment-related regulatory requirements.
  • Accountable for complex compliance reporting and ensuring accurate and timely submissions when requested.
  • Communicates with employees regarding their needs for leave and/or modified work schedules.
  • Ensure that employees are aware of their responsibilities and of any documentation and notice required to qualify for and to take leave.
  • Handle the FMLA and other leave administration process from the employee’s initial notice of the need for leave to the return to work. This includes gathering and completing all required paperwork, determining leave eligibility, designating leave as FMLA-qualifying, requesting medical certification as needed, and accounting for intermittent and reduced schedule leave use.
  • Maintain reasonable communication with employees on leave to facilitate smooth and timely return to work
  • Facilitate communication between employees and their managers during leave within reason.
  • Advise managers and employees on the intersection of leave laws with paid time off, workers compensation, as well as short-term and long-term disability benefits.
  • Oversee the return-to-work process for employees returning from extended FMLA, workers compensation, or other leave(s).
  • Facilitate other leave requests, which may include accommodation requests under the ADA.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of leave and accommodation requests in accordance with specified legal requirements and documentation of best practices.
  • Maintain knowledge of all applicable leave and accommodation laws including the FMLA, ADA, and state and local laws.
  • Responsible for the management, communication, revisions and updates to firm HR policies and procedures, such as Employee Handbooks.
  • Manage the internal immigration processes, establish immigration guidance for HR Business Managers and recruiting team, and partner with external counsel to troubleshoot and resolve escalated issues
  • Develop and implement policy research and analysis strategies.
  • Draft and/or recommend revisions to company leave and other policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Develop, manage, and track the review and updating of policies and procedures; supporting the owners of the documents with their review; ensuring the documentation is submitted to the approving committee in good time; and working with relevant individuals to ensure timely publication of approved documents.
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with staff to ensure consistent application of regulations and policies – advising/briefing/training staff as necessary.

The annualized salary range for this position is $115,000 to $150,000.Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
